Using the Plug-In Manager

From the View menu, choose Plug-In Manager to open or close the Plug-In Manager.

The Plug-In Manager displays your plug-ins in an easy-to-use tree view much like the Windows Explorer. You can use the Plug-In Manager to organize your plug-ins and also load FX plug-ins from it.

TIP You can dock the Plug-In Manager within the Sound Forge Pro workspace so it's always visible.

The tree structure at the left side of the Plug-In Manager is always the same as the menu structure in the FX Plug-In menu, changes in the folders and their content are immediately reflected in the menu above.

the Plug-ins folder structure, chose a folder to list all plug-ins, filtered by a certain aspect:

  • All: Lists all plug-ins.

  • Boris FX: Lists all Plug-ins.

  • Third Party: Lists all third party plug-ins, with subfolders for each vendor.

  • Packaged chains: Lists all Plug-In-Chain-Presets.

  • By category: Lists all Plug-ins in effect category folders. The category is either provided by the plug-in vendor or it is derived from the plug-in name. All other plug-ins are sorted into the FX folder.

    TIP Miscategorized plug-ins can be moved into the right folder by drag & drop. You can also create subfolders when the category is to wide for your plug-in collection, for instance create "Tape" and "Digital" folders below the "Delay" category.

  • By Type: Lists all plug-in in folders by VST version and 32/64bit version.

Use the FX Favorites folder in the tree to have rapid access to your favorite plug-ins. Plug-ins from this folder will be available from the lower section of the FX Plug-Ins menu.

These controls are used when the tree view is hidden (see 6). You can also navigate to any folder using the drop-down menu. This button brings you one folder up in the folder tree. Re-Read te folder contents with the refresh button .

Click the Create New Folder button if you want to create a subfolder under any of the Plug-ins folders or in the Favorites folder. Subfolders will be displayed as submenus in the FX Plug-Ins menu. To rename a subfolder, right click it and chose Rename from the context menu and enter the new name into the field. You can delete empty folders with the Delete button .

Search field: Enter one or more search strings (not case sensitive) to filter the list of plug-ins shown below to quickly find your plug-ins by name.

This button shows or hides the tree or the options view.

On the right side of the dialog, the plug-ins in the selected folder and its subfolders are listed. Double click a sub folder to enter it.

You can move your plug-ins into these folders by dragging it. You can also drag plug-ins into other folders in the tree view, for instance to change its category or to build your own category tree below the Favorites folder.

To remove a plug-in from a Favorites folder, right click it and chose Delete.

NOTE You cannot remove a plug-in from a folder in the Plug-ins part of the tree, you can just move it between these folders. By this it is ensured that every installed plug-in, that is not hidden (see below) is listed somewhere in the tree.

You can use the Plug-in Manager to apply an FX plug-in:

  • Double click on a plug-in to apply the effect on a selection in a data window. If no data is selected, the effect will be applied on the whole audio data.

  • Drag & Drop an effect onto a data window to add it to the Plug-in chain of this data window.

Options view: If you want to exclude certain types of effects from the display, uncheck the corresponding option.

Rename a plug-in Closed

You can use the Plug-In Manager to replace a plug-in's default name with a name that's more user-friendly or meaningful.

To do this, right-click a plug-in and choose Rename from the shortcut menu. The plug-in name becomes editable. Type a new name in the box and press Enter. The new name is used in the Plug-In Manager and FX Plug-In menu.

Hide a plug-in Closed

If you want to prevent a plug-in from appearing in Sound Forge Pro without uninstalling the plug-in, you can use the Plug-In Manager to hide it. For example, you you need the VST2 version of a plug-in in another application but you want to use only the VST3 version in Sound Forge Pro.

To hide a plug-in, find it in the Plug-ins section of the tree (not in the Favorites), right-click it and choose Hide from the shortcut menu. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to permanently hide the plug-in.

TIP To restore hidden plug-ins, you can force Sound Forge Pro to rescan your system for plug-ins by deleting the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BorisFX\Sound Forge Pro\2026.0\DXCache key in the Windows Registry.
